Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.
Body of Christ, save me.
Blood of Christ, inebriate me.
Water from the side of Christ, wash me.
Passion of Christ, strengthen me.
O good Jesus, hear me.
Within Thy wounds hide me.
Suffer me not to be separated from Thee.
From the malignant enemy, defend me.
In the hour of my death, call me.
And bid me come to Thee.
that with Thy saints I may praise Thee.
Forever and ever.  Amen

This is a new prayer for me even though it's been a well-known Catholic prayer since the early fourteenth century.  My son is learning it at his Catholic School and I am learning it at church following daily mass.  It's a beautiful prayer that means "the soul of Christ" in Latin.  Traditionally it is recited after receiving the Holy Eucharist.  I once heard the Catholic Church described as "a treasure trove" of faith traditions and it is so true.  I continually learn new traditions or prayers about my faith even though I've been raised Catholic.  It's been a blessing to me and I pray my son will reap the rewards of growing up in the faith!

Blessings,
Noreen

  1. Noreen, this is of my most favourite prayers! I love the hymn with the same words too which we sometimes sing after Communion. Actually, even if we don't sing the hymn, I always say this prayer after Communion. It is so beautiful.

In the hour of my death, call me.
And bid me come to Thee.
that with Thy saints I may praise Thee.

Whenever I say this words I imagine entering Heaven and there is Jesus and Thomas and all the saints waiting to greet me. And Thomas smiles and knows me and everything is so right!

Thank you for sharing this prayer. God bless!

  2. Pre kids I used to pray this beautiful prayer after every Holy Communion...now, with all the kiddos, all I say is "thank You" over and over and I also say "May the whole world burn with a desire of love for You oh Lord"

  3. Sue ~ I agree it is so beautiful! I have no idea why I've never heard of it before and am very grateful our parish priest is having us recite it as a group, following communion. I have to take out my prayer book since it's not quite memorized!

Jamie ~ I love that! And will have to remember your special prayer and recite it too.
