You're Never Too Old To Enjoy A Picture Book

I've seen many great Advent books listed in other blogs herehere and here.   Instead of buying them I've been putting holds on them at the library and going almost daily to pick them up.  They're all picture books and I have them piled up on a table in my house.  I've found my 11 year old, reading through them and either laughing or commenting on learning something new.  I've enjoyed reading them myself and will be bringing them to my Religious Ed class this weekend to share with my first graders.  So thank you to Jessica, Jen and Tiffany!

There is a sweet tradition that I saw on Gardenia's Love My Little Flower blog.  She wraps up her Advent books, one for each night, and then her daughter unwraps one book a night that they read together.  Most are old favorite books but she will buy a new one or two to add in each year.  I thought that was a great way to enjoy reading about the Advent Season.

Here are the books I've already picked up from my local library:

The Baker's Dozen by Aaron Shepard

The Legend of Saint Nicholas by Demi

The Miracle of Saint Nicholas by Gloria Whelan

Saint Nicholas by Ann Tompert

The Nativity: From the Gospels of Matthew and Luke: by Ruth Sanderson

Mortimer's Christmas Manger by Jane Chapman

This is the Stable by Cynthia Cotten

The Night of Las Posadas by Tomie DePaola

Las Posadas by Jennifer Blizin Gillis (English version)

Strega Nona's Gift by Tomie DePaola

Mary of Nazareth by Cecil Bodker

I can't wait for the rest to come in!

I've joined Jessica from Shower of Roses today to share my Advent Books with many others!  Come and check it out.

And if you're looking for the St. Andrew Novena you can find a beautiful printable novena card at Joyfilled Family blog.  Thank you Lena!!

Blessings,
Noreen

  1. Noreen, thanks for all of the tips. And I agree! My big boys (ages 12 and 11) will still come in and sit down while I'm reading picture books to my daughter. Sometimes they'll even read through them themselves.

  2. Hi Noreen - I'm just catching up on your blog. I love the wrapped books idea but am not that organized. Thanks for your idea of getting them from the library. I'm not sure why I didn't think of that simple solution.

Great news about the abortion clinic. I just hope that there is an option to teach the women about safe and effective birth control. It's sad but some women don't have access to birth control and for many reasons abstinence is not an option or choice for them.

Thanks so much for asking about Grace. She has eaten some pasta at feeding therapy and she at home too. Not much but she has done it.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  3. Noreen, that's a great idea to get them from the library! I never thought of that. I've aquired a basket's worth over the years, but I would always love to add some that have been recommended by friends. I've also weeded out the ones that have nothing to do with the real meaning of Christmas. My kids seem to fixate on those "just for fun Christmas books" and then we never get to the good stuff. So now they don't have any those in the basket this year and they are enjoyed reading quality Christmas stories :)

  4. you have picked out some lovely books -- some are new to me, and that's what I love about reading other moms' blogs. I always find something new. God bless your Advent, Noreen!

  5. Hi Noreen,

We love picture books too. We keep our Advent and Christmas ones in a basket in the lounge room, but I like the idea of wrapping them.

I can see a few of our favourites on your list including the ones by Tomie dePaola. Aren't the illustrations wonderful?

I wonder if picture books would work well on a reader such as the Kindle Fire. I will have to investigate!

    God bless.

  8. Thank you ladies for visiting! I'm just very grateful for the library because if I bought every book, I'd ever want...well, there's not enough money or space!

  9. HI Noreen, stopping by the link up to see what else has been added. Good to run into you again :) Living in Texas, we were able to take part in Las Posadas last year at our parish. It was a wonderful experience to read such a beautiful book and then take part in the tradition of it all. You have a beautiful list up there. Always fun to see what everyone is reading!
