Why Should We Let Go?

This quote comes from an excerpt of the late Joseph Cardinal Bernardin's book The Gift of Peace.   With the changes going on in my life, I felt the nudge of the Holy Spirit through this quote.

Our participation in the paschal mystery--in the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus--brings a certain freedom:

the freedom to let go,
to surrender ourselves to the living God,
to place ourselves completely in His hands, knowing that ultimately He will win out!

The more we cling to ourselves and others, the more we try to control our destiny--
the more we lose the true sense of our lives, the more we are impacted by the futility of it all.

It's precisely in letting go, in entering into complete union with the Lord, in letting Him take over,
that we discover our true selves.

It's in the act of abandonment that we experience redemption, that we find life,
peace and joy in the midst of physical, emotional and spiritual suffering.

Blessings,
Noreen

  1. I've been contemplating the concept of abandonment of our will to the will of God. In my reading of lives of the saints, it's a theme I see running through their lives. they are able to abandon their will to the will of God. What a high order, what a calling we have ! It is so difficult and yet, my daily prayer that I can accomplish this, little by little, step by step. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Sarah ~ thank you for coming to visit me!

Gardenia ~ I agree that it is a high order to abandon our will to the Will of God. It seems to go against human nature yet God impressed upon our hearts a desire to know Him. I think that's the right way to do it, step by step.

  3. Beautiful quote, Noreen. No doubt, our sanctity depends on this complete surrender to the Divine Will. The "smaller" we become the greater He becomes inside of us. God bless!

  4. Noreen, have you read Fr de Cassaude's book, "Abandonment to Divine Providence"? It is one of my favourite books and always helps me when my life hits a difficult patch and I have trouble adjusting.
    With prayers.

  6. Noreen, of course you may use my folders, etc as a resource for your rel. ed class. that last pic I have drew, and then colored it with glitter glue. It does sort of resemble water colors.
