Noah's Ark Cookie Recipe

Yesterday I reviewed this fun and educational activity book for Kregel Publications.

Inside this book is a recipe to make your own Noah's Ark cookie so I opted to test it out.

Here are the ingredients and steps:

Here is my final result!

Recipe:

Mix together in a bowl:
2 cups of flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ginger

Melt together in a separate bowl:
8 tbl of butter
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
2 tbl dark molasses

Pour the melted combination into the dry ingredients bowl and mix.
Stir into a lump and then chill in the fridge.

Roll out the lump on a piece of baking paper.
Cut an ark shape.
Pull away the rest of the dough and lift the ark and paper on to a baking pan.
Bake for about 10 minutes at 325 degrees.
Let cool and then decorate with frosting, icing, candy...etc.

You will have enough dough to make more shapes.

Rainbow Jello

For almost every family function, I am asked to make Rainbow Jello.
If I feel I have the time to do it, then I happily will make it.
But boy, it does take time...as in hours.
Looks wonderful though when done.
I only have pictures of the Jello still in the mold.
I made it for my nephew's First Communion Party and once it was taken out of the mold,
it was dinner time.

It's a mix of 4 different colors in two shades each.
Each flavor is used twice.  First time as is, then the next layer with sour cream.

Here's how I do it:

Blue is the first color for this mold and the first layer is regular blue.
Then I add a bit of sour cream to the second blue layer to lighten its color.
Next color is regular yellow.
Then I add a bit of sour cream to the second layer of yellow....etc.
Each layer has to set in the fridge for about 25-30 minutes.
If you try to make it shorter and add a layer before it's ready, then they will blend together.
Tastes just as good but the look is off.

The recipe I used can be found HERE.
It calls for five different flavors (10 layers) but my mold holds four different flavors (8 layers).
You can make it in a 13X9 pan and use all five flavors.

You can play with any color combination you like or even just use one color and repeat the steps.
I've done blue and yellow for a scout event; red, white and blue for the 4th of July...etc.

My mold is not spiked like this one but it gives you the idea of how it looks
when popped out of the mold.
By the way, the Tupperware mold I use above works beautifully when removing it.

If you've never made it before, it's best to make it the day before your event.
It takes a good 4 hours or so to make it.
My family does enjoy it so it's worth it!

French Onion Soup

I saw a mix of Cugino's Baked Burgundy French Onion Soup at our local deli and had to try it.

Cuginos Baked Burgundy French Onion Soup

I have a new found love of French Onion Soup but have never made it.
So, I thought I would do it using this kit.
It's very easy.
All you have to do is slice up one onion, add water and the mix.
 Cook for 30 minutes.

Add croutons

 Then cheese.
I didn't have the recommended gruyere or swiss so I used what I had ~ muenster.

Last step is to put it under the broiler for a minute or two to melt the cheese.

It was very good!

On a weird side note, when I googled muenster cheese to see if it would be an appropriate substitute, I found a link to an Illinois man who is charged with trying to steal 42,000 pounds of muenster cheese from a Wisconsin creamery last month.

Who does that?

The report goes on to say that "last year they had news of a "mozzarella mafia" which was smuggling American cheese to Canada and selling it for a third of the price."

Didn't know there was an underground market for cheese.
